Just 40 miles North of Fredericksburg is the small community of Mason, Tx.
Mason is known as the “Gem of the Hill Country” and the only place in Texas where you can find Texas Topaz in nature. Topaz, the state gem, is found in Mason County’s stream beds and ravines.
Mason has one of the prettiest squares with shopping, antiques, restaurants, wine tasting rooms, galleries and home to the Odeon Theater. Open since 1928, the Odeon is the oldest continually operating theater in Texas.
Mason is noted for camping, hunting, and fishing and just in the recent years, wine growing. The beautiful Llano River runs just South of the town providing a great spot to kayak, fish, and swim. Historical interest centers around Indians who once roamed the area, a bloody feud known as the Hoo-Doo War and Fort Mason. Many homes and businesses are constructed of original-cut sandstone blocks from the old Fort.
Wildflowers blanket the surrounding hillsides and valleys during Spring and there are many picturesque German rock fences stitched along the countryside.
One of the most famous tidbit about the community is it is known as the Winningest Tennis town in Texas with 96 Individual State Championships. The Mason schools have received the “Bue Ribbon” award where students perform at very high levels or where significant improvements are being made in students' academic achievement. A National Blue Ribbon Award has become a mark of excellence in education recognized by everyone from parents to policy-makers in thousands of communities.
